Urban Upbound’s Class of 2026 Gearing Up for College: “No Matter the Circumstances, We All Have a Shot at Success.”
Kevin Tenecela, a senior at Information Technology High School in Queens, NY, describes his final year as a “roller coaster” filled with both challenges and accomplishments. “I’ve had my ups and downs. I’ve taken hard classes and easy classes, but I’m happy to be graduating and excited for the next chapter,” he shared.
Before joining Urban Upbound’s College Access Program, Kevin was uncertain about his future. As a first-generation student, he wasn’t sure whether to pursue college, trade school, or enter the workforce, and didn’t know where to begin navigating his options. Motivated to learn more, he joined the program and quickly found the guidance he needed. “This experience was really good. I enjoyed the program, the staff helped me decide the college I want to go to.”
While the program offers a range of services, including tutoring and SAT prep, Kevin found college tours to be especially impactful. “Attending college tours helped me see what kind of school I wanted to go to and what environment felt right for me,” he explained.
Originally from Ecuador, Kevin is proud to be paving the way as a first-generation student. He hopes his journey will inspire his younger siblings and cousins. “I want them to see that I managed to really do something for myself, that no matter the circumstances, we all have a shot at success.”
This fall, Kevin will attend New York University, where he is excited to experience college life and continue building toward his future goals. “One of my goals is to create generational wealth for my family and future generations,” he said.
Kevin’s story highlights the impact of early access to guidance and resources. “I want people to know that this program has really impacted me and it can impact others too, especially first-generation students.”
