More Than $12M Returned to Our Community
The 2020 tax season has ended and it was a unique one. The Urban Upbound Tax Preparation and Income Support team rose to the challenge and wrapped up the season with a record of 10,465 tax returns and a total of $12,012,249 returned to low- and middle-income New Yorkers.
When New York State went On Pause, we immediately put together a strategy to be able to serve the community while taking measures to ensure the safety of both our clients and team members. To that effect, Urban Upbound, a leading IRS VITA Program community partner, launched an online portal to facilitate virtual tax preparation.
Miriam Diaz Richaud is one of the twelve thousand people who came to Urban Upbound for help and trusted us to prepare her taxes. A single mother of two, she was used to paying up to $180 to file her taxes and receiving a small refund. This year, her refund was more than 3.5 times what she had received in the past, thanks to our tax team ensuring she received the various credits she was entitled to, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and American Opportunity Credit. Miriam is now planning to enroll in an electrical training program and focus on advancing in her career.
Our tax office, located at 12–15 40th Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101 is open and will continue to receive appointments throughout the year. Your donation helps keep our services open and available for those most in need. Thank you for supporting our Relief and Recovery efforts!
