Business Innovation consultants Stephen and Nelly from Urban Upbound’s Business Innovation team recently had the opportunity to collaborate with the January and March 2026 cohorts of business students from the Travelling University and the Mondragon Team. Traveling all the way from Spain to New York City, these students participated in Urban Upbound’s dynamic 48-Hour Challenge: an immersive experience designed to bridge academic learning with real-world problem solving.

On Day 1, Stephen and Nelly introduced the students to a real-life challenge currently faced by the worker cooperative teams Urban Upbound supports. Rather than working through a hypothetical case study, participants were tasked with tackling a genuine business obstacle, one that required both critical thinking and practical application. The assignment was clear: analyze the challenge and develop a viable, actionable solution by the following day.

What followed was a fast-paced, highly collaborative process. Students worked in teams to break down the problem, explore different frameworks, and apply innovative thinking. In just 48 hours, they moved from initial analysis to fully developed proposals, demonstrating not only their technical knowledge, but also their ability to adapt, collaborate, and think creatively under pressure.

By Day 2, the results were nothing short of impressive. Students presented well-structured solutions supported by flow charts, strategic frameworks, and fresh concepts tailored to the needs of worker cooperatives. Each presentation reflected a deep level of engagement and a clear understanding of both the challenge and the broader impact of their work.

Beyond the final presentations, the experience highlighted something even more powerful: the value of global collaboration. Bringing together international students and grounding their work in community-based business challenges created a unique environment where diverse perspectives fueled innovation.

The 48-Hour Challenge served as a strong reminder of what’s possible when purpose-driven work meets fresh ideas and cross-cultural exchange. For Urban Upbound, it reinforced the importance of investing in the next generation of thinkers and leaders — while continuing to support cooperative businesses with innovative, community-centered solutions.
