Ines Zarouri, College Access Graduate, Class of 2026

Ines Zarouri, a senior at the Academy of American Studies in Queens, NY describes her senior year as a “snowball effect,” but in the best way possible. Before joining Urban Upbound’s College Access program, Ines felt overwhelmed by the college application process. She was unsure how to research schools, choose a major, or even begin applying.

Referred by a friend, Ines initially knew little about Urban Upbound beyond its work supporting low-income families and students. That quickly changed. Since joining the program, she reflects, “My life has pivoted in such a good direction, and I don’t even know where I would be right now without Urban Upbound.”

Through one-on-one counseling and hands-on support, Ines found the structure and encouragement she needed to stay committed. “We spent countless hours virtually and in person applying to college, and without that help, I wouldn’t have known how to navigate the process,” she shared.

Urban Upbound staff played a critical role in building her confidence along the way. “Nadia and Jacob were there to answer every question I had. They gave us resources, suggestions, and even took us on college tours. All of that made me feel more confident applying.”

Ines’ hard work paid off! This fall, she will study Cognitive Science at Cornell University on a full-ride scholarship. She looks forward to gaining independence, building new connections, and thriving in a new environment at the college of her dreams.

Reflecting on her experience, Ines emphasizes the importance of access: “I think more programs like this should exist. Some students don’t have these resources in their schools, and because College Access is free, it can benefit so many people.”

Ines’ journey is a powerful example of what’s possible when students are given the guidance, resources, and support they need to succeed.
