From OSHA Training to Project Manager: Marvin Mangroo’s Success Story
Marvin Mangroo joined Urban Upbound in March 2025 through the organization’s OSHA/SST training program, facilitated by Mario Marroquin, Urban Upbound’s Training Services Manager. With prior experience in construction project management and a strong interest in advancing within the industry, Marvin recognized that obtaining the proper certifications and professional support would be essential to reaching the next level in his career.
In addition to completing the OSHA/SST training, Marvin participated in Urban Upbound’s citywide job readiness services, where he received support with resume development, mock interviews, and interview preparation. Through the guidance of the City Wide Workforce Development team, Marvin strengthened both his professional skills and confidence as a candidate.
Soon after, Marvin secured a Construction Project Manager role with Empire HD, earning an $80,000 salary, the highest placement within Urban Upbound’s Citywide JTBO program to date.
Reflecting on his experience, Marvin shared:
“Much thanks to Urban Upbound and the City Wide Workforce Development staff: Kyle, Mario, and Program Director Van, for helping me. Kyle and Mario were extremely informative and helped me build a strong resume.”
Marvin initially enrolled in the SST training because it is required for construction work in New York State, but he quickly realized the broader value of the program.
“The training is important because it’s a safety law, but it’s also great knowledge to have because it helps you and the people around you stay safe.”
Today, Marvin is focused on continuing to grow within the construction industry, with goals of becoming a senior manager and eventually expanding into visual project management. With his characteristic ambition and humor, he adds:
“Hopefully one day, I’ll take over New York…that’s the goal!”
Marvin now encourages others in his community to take advantage of Urban Upbound’s workforce services.
“I would definitely recommend Urban Upbound to everyone in my community. They helped me with job opportunities, resume writing, interview prep, and training programs like OSHA and SST. The organization is amazing.”
Marvin’s journey highlights the impact of combining workforce training, personalized career support, and opportunity, demonstrating how access to the right resources can help individuals achieve meaningful career advancement.
